Ryan Giggs: Take A Bow 1000x

I was still in school when Ryan Giggs made his debut for Manchester United 23 years ago. Now at the age of 39, the Welsh wizard is still on top of his game and considered by Sir Alex as an important team member of the current United squad. Yesterday, Ryan Giggs signed a one year contract extension with Manchester United. That means Giggs, who could play the 1,000th game of his career against Norwich today, will be playing for United when he turns 40 in November. What an outstanding achievement!

Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to Giggs and said:

What an incredible career. Absolutely fantastic! He could play his 1,000th game at Norwich tomorrow. He may be involved; he’ll certainly be involved against Real Madrid on Tuesday, so he’ll play his 1,000th game in one of those.  It’s phenomenal and unique in the modern game, but more than that I don’t think it will be achieved by anyone again, looking  at the way players’ contracts are played out these days.

I think those who love football are definitely admiring Ryan Giggs irrespective of whether they support Manchester United or not. To play professional football until you’re 40 is quite an achievement.  Therefore, to play for a club like Manchester United at the highest level is something extraordinary, especially for an outfield player like Giggs. Watching him running the show for 90 minutes against QPR last week makes one wonder when he will ever hang up his boots. Ryan Giggs is phenomenal – a footballer equivalent to Harry Houdini.

I’m looking forward to watching Ryan Giggs in action tonight. Hopefully he plays as Sir Alex could be tempted to rest him for the Champion League cruncher against Real Madrid in the mid-week. Having said that, I must say that it has been a joy watching Giggs in that #11 United shirt for more than two decades. For the 1000 times, take a bow Ryan Giggs!
