“Squeaky-Bum Time” – the phrase first coined by Manchester United’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson and is defined as “the tense final stages of a league competition, especially from the point of view of the leaders“. Looks like its squeaky-bum time again this season too as both Manchester teams that are fighting for this year’s title are struggling to get their act together with only a few remaining matches to go.
City dropped two vital points at the Britannia stadium and manager Roberto Mancini refused to shake hands with Stoke’s boss Tony Pulis accusing them of being too aggressive toward his players. United on the hand managed to get away with three points albeit a lucky one when referee failed to award Fulham a late penalty after Michael Carrick tripped Danny Murphy in United’s penalty box. Sir Alex was certainly not impressed with his team and made his feelings known to his players when he told the media that his team was lucky and Fulham should be given the penalty.
On paper it looks like United have the upper-hand. Apart from the much anticipated trip to Etihad stadium on April 30, the champion will only face teams from the bottom half of the table from now till the end of the season. Manchester City by contrast must go to Emirates stadium and face the resurgent Arsenal and has another tough away trip at St James Park in May. So advantage Manchester United? Definitely!
Having said that, United knows that it will not be as easy as it seems to be. The Fulham game shows that the Red Devils can get complacency at times and that might be their biggest worry! After all it is Squeaky-Bum Time… and even Manchester United and Sir Alex can feels it too.
