“Thank God that’s over. Thank God we can let Fred Perry lie easy. Thank God for Andy Murray.” – The Guardian, UK
After 76 years! Finally Britain have a grand slam champion. Andy Murray who won the Olympic gold earlier this year, became Britain’s first major champion since Fred Perry claimed his third American title in 1936, the year the Spanish Civil War started and Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected US president. A historic feat and wonderful achievement, taking consideration that Murray had lost all of his four previous Grand Slam finals.
Against World No. 2 and five-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic in the final, few would back the Scotsman to do it. But cheered on by fellow Scots Sir Sean Connery and Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, he survived a thrilling fightback by Djokovic to register his 24th career title and denied Djokovic the chance to claim the biggest pay-day in the history of the sport. Congratulation to Andy Murray – US Open Champion 2012.
