What does a football player want to do or want to have in his career other than winning medals and titles? Playing for a big club? Playing in the World Cup? Signing a mega-contract like Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi?
Hmm.. how about writing your name into the record book?
Yes, that’s what Italian football legend, Francesco Totti, did last night. Scoring with a delightful chip above Manchester City’s Joe Hart and became the oldest player to score in Champions League. Felicitazioni Francesco. Bravo!
UEFA Champions League Records
The official Champions League Twitter account posted the above photo last night to congratulate the mercurial Italian. Totti turned 38 on Saturday and his goal against City put him a head of Ryan Giggs for the title:
The Oldest Player To Score In Champions League!
Ryan Giggs’ previous record was 37 years and 289 days. The Welsh wizard has since retired from football at the end of last season and took up Manchester United’s offer to become Louis Van Gaal‘s assistant this season. Giggs took the previous record from Filippo Inzaghi in September 2011, with his brilliant solo effort against Benfica. Javier Zanetti, Laurent Blanc and Paolo Maldini completed the top SIX oldest players to score in the Champion League.
Francesco Totti (Roma) – 38 years and 3 days
Ryan Giggs (Manchester United) – 37 years and 289 days
Filippo Inzaghi (AC Milan) 37 years and 86 days
Javier Zanetti (Inter Milan) – 37 years and 71 days
Laurent Blanc (Manchester United) – 36 years and 338 days
Two Birds With One Stone
Until last night, Francesco Totti had never scored in England – therefore he actually managed to break two records with one wonderful goal. The Giallorossi veteran also became the first-ever 38-year-old to score in the elite European competition breaking the 37 year-old mark set by Giggs, Inzaghi and Zanetti.
UEFA Champions League’s oldest players
Francesco Totti will still have a long way break the record for Champions League’s oldest players. He will need to play more another 6 years to achive that. The Top 5 are as follow:
- Marco Ballotta (Lazio) – 43 years and 253 days
- Mark Schwarzer (Chelsea) – 41 years and 198 days
- Alessandro Costacurta (AC Milan) – 40 years and 213 days
- David Weir (Rangers) – 40 years and 212 days
- Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United) – 40 years and 212 days
Another record also tumbled last night when Barcelona’s Xavi Hernandez made his 143 appearances in Champion League. That erased the previous record of 142 set by Real Madrid’s legend, Raul. Ryan Giggs still hold the most appearances in Champion League if we include the qualifying round as well with 151.
