Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is really in a mess. You don’t have to be a football fan to understand that. Despite the millions of ringgit spent on developing the sport in this country, our national team is currently languishing lowly at 162 ranking among all football nations. To rub salt into the wound, our neighbours, Singapore, Philippines and Thailand are above us in the FIFA ranking. Mind you, 10 years ago, we would have put six or seven goals past the Philippines. But look at them now.
Therefore it is understandable that FAM need results – so desperately that any win at any level will do. I think I can almost hear FAM’s President screaming at Harimau Muda coach “Win the Pesta Bola Merdeka or else…”. Hmm.. That doesn’t sounds well if you are Ong Kim Swee, right? (more…)

My biggest compliment to the Japanese football team that beat Malaysia this week is by congratulating the Harimau Muda for managing to keep the score down to 2 – 0. Mind you, that was a fine achievement considering how superior the Blue Samurais in term of skills, speed and fitness. The way the young Japanese Olympic Team closed down on our players – so quick, so effective, really reminded me of this year’s Champion League final between Barcelona and Manchester United. Like Barca, the Japanese team gave zero inch for Harimau Muda to play the ball and closed down on them so swiftly thus sucking them into pressure. Harimau Muda obviously succumbed to the relentless pressure and gave away possession of the ball cheaply putting the pressure even more on the team. In the end, we had to play deep into our own half and thanks to some decent performances by the defence and heroics from our goalkeeper, the final score was 2 – 0. It could have 10 – 0 though.
