When it comes to sporting event, I don’t think there is another event bigger than the FIFA World Cup. Football is the most lovable sport in this planet and the ultimate prize for any football player is to win the World Cup. For all the football fans around the globe, the dream is to see their nation to lift the football Holy Grail, the FIFA World Cup Trophy, a 36 cm (14.2 in) high trophy, made of solid 18 carat (75%) gold and weighs 6.175 kg (13.6 lb), designed by Italian designer, Silvio Gazzaniga in 1970. Therefore, everytime when there’s a world cup (which is held every 4 years), it is like a festival around the world. Seems like time stood still for a month as almost everyone in this world concentrating on the world biggest event.

Past Winners and Favourites

European and South American countries are the traditional powerhouses in football. Brazil is the most successful World Cup team ever by winning it 5 times. They also the only nation to have played in every World Cup (22) to date. Germany and Italy have won it 4 times and continue to be the main contenders in every World Cup finals.

Prior to the start of the tournament, Argentina (2 times winner) and Brazil were the hot favourites along with usual such as England, France, Spain, Germany and Portugal. Asian teams as always seen as a long shot for the title and were not be given much hope this year even though the World Cup is played in the Asian soil, Qatar.

Doha 2022 – The Story So Far

I wrote piece this after the first week of the World Cup and upon seeing Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim been installed as Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister. As always, the World Cup is full of excitement and shocking results.

After Iran were humbled by England 2-6 and Qatar lost in their opening match, Asian teams fought back and put a huge smile on our face. Saudi Arabia causes the biggest tournament upset of the century by beating hot favourite and Lionel Messi powered Argentina 2-1. Inspired by that result, Japan put up a brave performance and upsets the 4 times champion, Germany also by 2-1. Not to be outclassed, South Korea held another South American giant, Uruguay 0-0. Getting pumped up with those results I think, Iran responded by beating Wales 2-0. Wow, football has come this far and we hope that someday, if not in this World Cup, that there can be a champion from Asia.

Other results have been less shocking and in accordance with the form book. Earlier results indicate that Spain, England and Brazil have a good chance as they seem to settled early and playing confidently. International football is played at slower tempo compares to club football since the players are hardly play together and need time to understand each others. Still it is enjoyable to watch though. Better than watching Wakanda Forever, ouuchh.

For those watching the World Cup, please make sure that you have enough sleep and able to concentrate on your work. It’s end of the year and everybody must be very busy, therefore don’t get too excited and make unnecessary mistake. Wishing all the teams good luck and may the best team win. Ole!
