The day I went to the cinema, Rotten Tomatoes average reviews have rated the movie Hansel & Gretel, featuring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, a dismal 18%. But the reviewer in Cinema Online has given it a 4 star rating. Rather than watching ‘The Last Stand’ and ‘Bullet Head’, I took my chance and sat at the GSC cinema at 1Borneo Hypermall, watching Hansel & Gretel. I think there were barely 10 people with me inside the theatre.
My 1 hour and 37 minutes were not wasted.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
Directed by Tommy Wirkola, this Paramount Pictures / MGM fantasy supernatural action movie did not disappoint me. Sure it’s illogical. The superhuman prowess of the main characters was unbelievable. But the same can be said for Thor, Iron Man, etc. It’s a movie, a make-believe world.
I could think of worst, such as, well, I’d rather not say.
Anyway, those who enjoyed the fantasy supernatural genre such as Lincoln – the Vampire Hunter, Supernatural series, Grimm, etc, would most probably like this movie. Fans of hunky Jeremy Renner and the enchanting Gemma Arterton would find their stars looking great in his movie.
It’s about the siblings, Hansel and Gretel, who managed to escape from a witch by killing the witch, and became witch hunters thereon.
Their mysterious past and their ‘lucky’ escape will be explained in the end.
The script is, I confess, far from outstanding, but their imagination is quite good. A twist, well, lots of twists actually, to the original Grimm’s version of Hansel & Gretel, but nothing new there, if you are a fan of Grimm (Diva Universal) and Once Upon A Time (Star World).
For your info, the rating has further declined to 15% but 63% of the audience liked it. So, don’t let Rotten Tomatoes be the only judge.
Let you judge it yourself.
