I see banners about ‘Menu Rakyat 1Malaysia’ at the sides of the roads especially around the city. RM2 for breakfast? Hmmmm, I wonder where these restaurants are? So I googled for ‘menu rakyat’ and looked into a very user-friendly and straight-to-the-point website [Link]. Pleasant layout, by the way.
What do you know – there are actually 68 eateries in Sabah serving ‘Menu Rakyat’! About 30 of the restaurants/cafeteria serving these breakfast and/or lunch specials are within my area, but those that are in the learning institutes may not be accessible to me.

According to the heading, the breakfast starts at RM2-50. Yupp, Sabah/Sarawak/WP Labuan ‘special’ costs. Expected. So, imagine my surprise when I saw that a few restaurants do offer the starting price of RM2-00. So, definitely, I am curious to know more about these specials. Are they delicious? Fulfilling? Eatable? I really must give it a try.
My top choices are :
Wawasan Maju Enterprise – Gerai No. 5, Kompleks Persekutuan Kerajaan Persekutuan Sabah, Jalan UMS, 88400 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (RM2.50 – 3 Roti Jala + 1 Kopi 0/Teh O/Minuman Panas)
Inang’s Café – Lot 13A, Ground Floor, Likas Plaza Fasa I, Likas Kota Kinabalu. (RM2.50 – Nasi Lemak Biasa + Tea O/ Kopi O ; RM2.00 – Roti Canai + Tea O/ Kopi ;RM2.00 – Mee/Mee Hoon/ Kuew Teow Goreng Kosong + Tea O/ Kopi O)
Akmal Curry House & Catering – Lot 58, G-0-11, Lorong Sulaman Central, 88450 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. (RM2.50 – Nasi Lemak Biasa + Tea O/ Kopi O ; RM2.00 – Roti Canai + Tea O/ Kopi O ; RM2.00 – Mee/Mee Hoon/ Kuew Teow Goreng Kosong + Tea O/ Kopi O)
Has anybody tried any of these or the other restaurants yet? Are the Menu Rakyat ok? The lunch price is not that outstanding, considering that I usually get RM4-00 at other restaurants for ‘Nasi + 1 Lauk + 1 Sayur’ but add some RM0.20 for water. I doubt the ‘Lauk’ includes fish. Fish is a bit more expensive.
Nonetheless, I figure, at least for lunch, it’s a saving of about RM0.50 since most are serving the meal with sirap sejuk. Restoran Nurhidayah & Katering III in Lahad Datu even serves it with Bandung Sejuk. Opps, no price tag, could be RM5-00. I wonder whether the price could be further lowered if we drink plain water for lunch or if we ask for half portion of the rice? Let’s try ask.
