Two goals down against the mighty Germans with no Saari brothers to rely on – a Malaysian team of old will definitely have their head down, playing with their emotions and get butchered by the World Junior Champion.
Well, not this time. Probably inspired by Manchester United’s comeback win at Villa Park a day earlier, the young Malaysians produced the unthinkable and scored three against the Germans to register a shocking win at the opening day of the Sultan of Johor Cup. It was certainly a good morale booster win ahead of the Junior World Cup in Delhi next year.
Even Sir Alex Ferguson will be proud with our young tigers.
Sultan of Johor Cup
I know this is just an invitational tournament and we shouldn’t get too carried away, still, the way they fought back and showed no fear against the five-time World Junior Champion is something that we have not seen from our hockey team for quite some time. Nobody expected us to get anything from this game, let alone beating the European powerhouse, who is a huge favourite to win the Junior World Cup in Delhi next year. To make it more dramatic, the winning goal was scored with only two minutes left on the clock.
Oh! it really got a Red Devils’ trademark stamped on it.
Credit must be given to coach, K. Dharmaraj, who has successfully turned a once-no-hope team to an Asian Junior Champion last year. Now his team has improved further and threatens to challenge the best junior teams in the world next year.
Let’s hope we can continue to produce good results and be back among the world’s best in the near future.
