I must have said it too soon, didn’t I? After putting up a splendid comeback win against the Germans, the Malaysian hockey team has been a free-fall after that. Losing out to New Zealand, Australia and now Pakistan, the young Malaysian team is now facing the prospect of playing in the fifth-sixth bracket of the Sultan of Johor Cup, the tournament they won last year.
So much of the Devilish comeback and new found mental strength, I guess.
When given hope, they tend to falter, as usual. Meanwhile, the Germans have bounced back very well and are in contention for a place in the final after beating the Australian 2 – 0 to add to 5 – 1 trashing they handed to New Zealand a day earlier.
To be fair, Malaysia did put some good performance during the tournament. They could have won against Australia if not for some moments of madness in the closing stage where two of our young tigers were shown the marching orders and left the team playing with nine players against eleven Australians.
They did well again against Pakistan but poor finishing left them soothing after losing out to their arch rival by 0 – 2.
So hope is still there. But K. Dharmaraj and his boys must buck up fast as the World Junior Cup is just around the corner. They certainly can restore some confidence by beating table topper, India, in the last group match today.
Come on Malaysia.
By the way, the match against India will play at 6.05 pm (Malaysian time) today. Those in JB, come on lah, give our boys some support.
Turun stadium ok!
