Desa Dairy Farm Mesilau Highland Kundasang

At the foothills of Mt. Kinabalu, on the Mesilau Plateau, lies the Desa Dairy Farm Mesilau, home to the Friesien cattles that produce the local Desa Dairy products. It is an interesting place to visit because of the stark contrast in features when compared to the lowlands and towns of Sabah. It is also a great place for kids and adults to see themselves how the local fresh milk is prepared.

How To Get To Desa Dairy Farm Mesilau From KK

To reach the Desa Dairy Farm in Kundasang, Ranau, you need to take the Kota Kinabalu – Tuaran road, and when you reach Telipok, be prepared to turn to the Tamparuli junction.  Thereafter, it will mostly be an uphill drive on a mostly winding road.  After about 1-2 hours of driving, you would be greeted by the cool breeze of Kundasang. I would highly recommend that you switch off the air-cond and feel the cool breeze touching your skin.

With an area of 199 hectares, it is the largest dairy farm in Sabah.  From the Mt.Kinabalu National Park, it would take about 30 minutes’ drive to the Desa Dairy Farm.  The road uphill is quite steep, so just drive slow and enjoy the scenery along the way, particularly the vegetable farms and the pretty flowers gracing the side of the road.  If you prefer, you could visit the War Memorial Park at the right hand side of the road before you travel to the Dairy Farm.

Visiting The Farm

Once you reach Desa Dairy Farm, you will feel the difference.  More than 2,000 meters above sea level, the scenery is amazing and the meadows so green!  Out of the 199 hectars, 133 hectars have been planted with improved pasture such as Kikuyu, Narok Setaria and legume (white clover).  Definitely not the usual weed found in all other areas!

The best time to visit the farm is around 2:30pm as milking session starts at 3pm daily. The processing plant is fully automated – from mechanical milking, pasteurising, homogenising, packaging and distribution. Each of the Friesian cattle could produce at least 14 litres of milk a day. The Farm is now capable of producing about one million litres of milk per year.

Fresh Milks

Fresh milk in original & chocolate flavors are available for sale at the lobby from about 11am onwards. Some souvenirs (t-shirts, mugs, fridge magnets, etc) are also available – something that could last longer than fresh milk! Anyway, Desa fresh milk is available in most supermarkets in Sabah and Sarawak.

Farm Milk Price:
-1L plain milk= RM 4.50
-1L choc milk= RM5.00
-1/2L plain milk= RM2.80
-1/2L choc milk= RM3.00
-250ml goat milk= RM 4.70 (I didn’t see the goats)
