It has been a while since my family went out together on a vacation. As the kids have grown up, time has become the ultimate obstacle for us. Everybody has a different study break. In a world where technology has advanced so much and travelling has been made easier, we are stuck at our home because we can’t get everyone on board. Leaving someone behind is a big No-No by the way. Therefore, when my daughter came back from Labuan for a short break last week, we swiftly booked a weekend stay at Shangri-La Rasa Ria Tuaran, albeit it is a mere 15 minutes drive from our house. I thought the three very enjoyable days together were really great, worth sharing in this blog.
Shangri-La Rasa Ria
Shangri-La Rasa Ria is a five star resort located at Pantai Dalit, in Tuaran district of Sabah, not far from Kota Kinabalu City. It is a famous resort and is popular with the international tourists. When we were there, the resort was quite packed with tourists, especially from Korea. Anyong Haseyo!
Since I’m not doing a review, let me keep it simple and just say that this resort is beautiful, the facilities are first class, the staff were friendly and helpful, with spacious and comfortable rooms plus excellent choice of foods at the restaurants. Well, obviously that’s what you’ll get if you are willing to pay 😁. Certainly a great place to relax and unwind.
If you need to know more about the resort and its facilities, please visit their website HERE. I just want to highlight a few things that we did and enjoyed while we were there.
There are plenty of watersport activities here including Jet Ski, Windsurfing and E-Foil. In the end, we decided to choose Ocean Kayak as our first day activity. Plus, it’s included in our ‘Playcation‘ package. As an official cameraman/videoman of the family, I did not have the first hand experience but I’m still thrilled to see how much my kids enjoyed it. Clearly can be seen from their faces, even from a distance.
If you are on a double or triple kayak, you need to coordinate with the team members. Kayaking further up the ocean will help you avoid the waves but the risk is you might be too far away from the life guards.
Nonetheless, it was a fun stuff to start with. Everyone was extremely happy and it set the mood for the following days.
Horse riding here is not like at the Zoo or certain recreational places. You get to ride the horse along the beach and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The winds blowing in this area really gets your adrenaline going.
The horses are well-trained and healthy. It was nice to take photos with them. Just look at the photos below.
ATV stands for all-terrain vehicle, a motorized off-highway vehicle designed to travel on four low-pressure or non-pneumatic tires. For a simple explanation, look at the photo below. 😊
If horse riding is for the younger kids, ATV is certainly for teenagers and adults wanting for a thrill ride. It is not that easy to operate the vehicle even if you ride motorcycle on a daily basis. It doesn’t have a throttle like the motorbike and you control the speed using your thumb. Ohh.. that’s really uncomfortable.
Putting that aside, riding an ATV is fun and challenging. Be careful not to overdo and get hurt. Roads are bumpy and you can easily fall.
Fine, we can do karaoke at many other places. However, when you at a slightly remote place with no outdoors activities to do (due to the rain), karaoke is a splendid substitute for the family.
The Gold Room area is large enough to accommodate the whole family comfortably (12 persons). The sound system is great and the song choices are not bad at all. I did K-Pop duets with my daughter. We are BLINKS ha ha..
Nature Walks at Nature Reserve Area
Well, this is quite misleading tho. We didn’t walk, we actually hiked to the top of whatever the hill’s name over there. It is quite challenging if you are not fit to climb. Make sure you wear appropriate attire and gears. Selection of shoes is very important for this purpose. Ensure sufficient H2O & mosquito repellent as well.
Having said that, it is quite satisfying when you reach the top. The view is outstandingly beautiful. Loved it. Worth the climb, I think.
On the way to the top, make sure you try out the hanging bridge (canopy walkaway). Another fun stuff to do while you are here.
Foods are absolutely delicious with a wide variety to choose from, which is as expected from a restaurant at a five star resort. The dining area is spacious but slightly crowded when we were there due to huge number of guests at that time. I guess the tourism industry is gradually picking up. Good to see.
We had marvelous buffet breakfasts and dinners there, if there’s anything lacking, according to my wife, it’s hot and spicy foods. I’d say, there were so many seafood dishes there, we were really spoilt for choice.
It has been a very enjoyable weekend for us. Our schedule was packed that I completely did not watch TV at all. Luckily there’s no Premier League match last week as the UK is still mourning from the death of their beloved Queen. Otherwise I would have missed it.
Last but not least, to those who wish to travel to Sabah for a short break, we recommend you to stay at this resort. Do read our posting on Manukan Island as another alternative for a fantastic short family vacation in Sabah.
